JD Salinger – The Catcher in the Rye Audio Book

The Catcher in the Rye figures among one of J. D. Salinger’s most successful works. Although it was written with adult readers in mind, the book became hugely popular with adolescents. These readers apparently identified strongly with the book’s young protagonist, Holden Caulfield, and the problems and issues he has to face, typical of the struggles that teenagers go through. To some readers, Holden comes across as petulant, complaining, and self-absorbed. To others, he comes across as real, representing confused youth in an authentic way.

The Catcher in the Rye makes effective use of the conversational style of story-telling, with the narrative unfolding from Holden’s point of view. We imagine him going through difficult times, struggling with issues of alienation and adolescent angst. And as we listen to him recount his experiences we can “feel” his emotions and troubled thoughts. The fact that the story is narrated by Holden employing the teenage slang used during that particular period of time contributes significantly to enhancing the story’s strong appeal. Holden seems to speak to us from the heart, his thoughts leaping out of the book’s pages and making an impact on its readers.

American literature is peopled with many heroes and heroines. To this day, however, Holden remains one of the more popular and deeply loved ones, in spite of, or maybe because of his flaws.
Adolescent readers are held mesmerized by Holden’s experiences – and his perception of them. A lot of the conflicts that the book concerns itself with are conflicts that “real” teenagers are confronted with as they transition from sensitive angst-filled youth to adulthood.

You can read Catcher in the Rye online free as it is currently available in digital formats. It is interesting to note that many people apparently enjoy a story more deeply when they hear it narrated to them. This probably accounts for the immense popularity of the Catcher in the Rye in its audio book format.
